What I don't get is... why?
They see how controversy sold a shitload of GTA games... and GTA was fine because it was GTA... but CoD has always been a pretty straight up warfare game. IW didn't need to take this route... it's not like it wasn't going to sell a shitload as it was.

Surprising. None of us here are the liberal panty-waste type and yet even we think this is stupid. I get that a terrorist act like that sets up the story for America being under siege and yadda yadda, but what's going on in that video is just asking for trouble.

This reminded me of the shitstorm the developer for 6 Days in Fallujah. received for making a game that actually had you fighting terrorism. Konami promptly canceled and distanced themselves from the developer after 1 day of negative feedback. I wonder how this video will be taken from families of victims of 9-11 or that hotel in Pakistan that was stormed recently.

one posting somewhere said something about you (the player) has to go undercover into a terrorist cell and one of the things you have to do is run around a mall (or something) killing everyone you see.

I hear ya about the video. I could tell it was metacafe but they took the video down or I just can't find it.

I think it's a setup level like Pickled said. Nobody really knows. I bet IW says it was removed months ago or was never really a level at all. It's the actual footage that you don't see in the Teaser Trailer from months ago.

From what I understand it's along the lines of the first mission from the last one. You're the president of sand monkey land getting drug through the streets, seeing everything from his perspective, eventually witnessing your own execution. Only this time you have a little more free reign and control your character, but you're basically following your squad as they lay waste to civilians, popping off shots of your own whenever you want.

Opening scene that is totally scripted and sets the story for the rest of the game.

After bogus media outcries about Grand Theft Auto and alien rape in Mass Effect, I took any hint of controversy about Modern Warfare 2's terrorist mission with a boulder of salt. Well, now that I have played the game front to back, I can honestly tell you that the terrorist mission in the Russian airport is ugly, disgusting, and wholly unnecessary. I understand the scene as part of Modern Warfare 2's narrative -- it is the flashpoint event that sets the main plot into motion. But this could have been easily handled with a cutscene. There was no reason to make it playable except to draw attention to itself. A total "look at me!" moment. Now, I know Infinity Ward put in a pre-game disclaimer says that something upsetting was coming and that you could skip it without disrupting the plot. But seriously, all that did was just draw further attention to the event -- and the game itself. There is a saying that there is no such thing as bad publicity. I wish that wasn't true, but it is.

I think I killed as many civilians in this level as I did bad guys the whole game. But then again they're Russian civilians, so who cares.
