CNN US
Church plans Quran-burning event
RELIGION

July 30, 2010|By Lauren Russell, CNN

In protest of what it calls a religion "of the devil," a nondenominational church in Gainesville, Florida, plans to host an "International Burn a Quran Day" on the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The Dove World Outreach Center says it is hosting the event to remember 9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam. With promotions on its website and Facebook page, it invites Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at the church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

"We believe that Islam is of the devil, that it's causing billions of people to go to hell, it is a deceptive religion, it is a violent religion and that is proven many, many times," Pastor Terry Jones told CNN's Rick Sanchez earlier this week.

Jones wrote a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," and the church sells coffee mugs and shirts featuring the phrase.

Muslims and many other Christians -- including some evangelicals -- are fighting the initiative.

The church launched a YouTube channel to disseminate its messages.

"I mean ask yourself, have you ever really seen a really happy Muslim? As they're on the way to Mecca? As they gather together in the mosque on the floor? Does it look like a real religion of joy?" Jones asks in one of his YouTube posts.

"No, to me it looks like a religion of the devil."

The Islamic advocacy group Council on American-Islamic Relations called on Muslims and others to host "Share the Quran" dinners to educate the public during the monthlong fast of Ramadan beginning in August. In a news release, the group announced a campaign to give out 100,000 copies of the Quran to local, state and national leaders.

"American Muslims and other people of conscience should support positive educational efforts to prevent the spread of Islamophobia," said CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper in the release.

The National Association of Evangelicals, the nation's largest umbrella evangelical group, issued a statement urging the church to cancel the event, warning it could cause worldwide tension between the two religions.

"The NAE calls on its members to cultivate relationships of trust and respect with our neighbors of other faiths. God created human beings in his image, and therefore all should be treated with dignity and respect," it said in the statement.

Dove's Facebook page, set up for the September event, has more than 1,600 fans.

"Eternal fire is the only destination the Quran can lead people to, so we want to put the Quran in it's [sic] place -- the fire!" the page says.

Though the game has been presumed dead so many times you’d need an abacus to keep track, “Duke Nukem Forever” is very much alive – and he’s coming to store shelves soon.

Take Two Interactive Software pulled off one of the video game world’s biggest surprises Friday, announcing not only that the over-a-decade-in-development first person shooter was nearly finished, but backing that claim up by giving the 150,000 people attending the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle the chance to play the game.
The rest of the world will get its chance in 2011 – on the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
First announced in 1997, “Duke Nukem Forever” became an annual presence on vaporware lists and a running joke among gamers for its molasses-like development schedule and frequent restarts. A year ago, it appeared the final nail had been hammered into the game’s coffin, when developer 3D Realms ran out of money, let go virtually all of its employees and began a legal war with its publisher, Take-Two Interactive Software.
That suit was settled earlier this year, however. And while 3D Realms is no more, Gearbox Software, the studio behind “Borderlands” and “Brothers in Arms” (and staffed with a number of former 3DR employees), has taken over development on the game.
"Gearbox has enabled die-hard key Duke Nukem franchise builders and skilled veteran game makers to stand together and deliver,” said Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software. “All gamers deserve a happy ending and after all of us gamers feeling the full range of emotions about Duke Nukem Forever, I am thrilled to be in a position with the trust, power and means to make it happen.”
“Duke Nukem Forever” is, technically, a sequel to 1996’s “Duke Nukem 3D” - though normally a sequel takes no more than three years to put together, while “DNF” started in the Clinton administration.
The game missed ship-date after ship-date, and many began to assume it would never see the light of day. Many pointed to 3D Realms co-founder George Broussard as the reason for the delays – noting that his obsession with perfection for the title resulted in a never-ending cycle of changes.
The bad times are over now, though – and the game is nearing completion. And after 13 long years, some of the industry’s most core fans at PAX have finally gotten to see for themselves if the wait was worth it.

It's really actually finally happening. After over 13 years of drama, Duke Nukem Forever WILL be released... in 2011 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
As revealed at PAX, Take-Two Interactive/2K Games have officially handed over the reins of the legendary, highly anticipated piece of former vaporware to Gearbox Software after shelving 3D Realms some time ago. Gearbox, best known for Borderlands these days, seems like an excellent choice to finish up the project, so those of us who have been following the series since back in the day are definitely hyped.

The game is set to be revealed, live, from PAX via USTREAM in a few minutes time:

LONDON – The opaque visor of one of Britain's most famous helmets has been lifted.
The identity of The Stig, the always-anonymous test driver on the popular television show "Top Gear," has long been a closely guarded secret. On Wednesday, lawyers said the BBC had been refused an injunction blocking publication of a book revealing the identity of the character.
Shortly after, publishers HarperCollins said in a statement that a 33-year-old racing driver named Ben Collins "has a great story to tell about his seven years as The Stig, which will appeal to a wide audience beyond just motoring enthusiasts."
Calling it a "victory for freedom of speech," HarperCollins said the book will be published in Britain on Sept. 16.
The white-suited Stig is the second in the role; the first Stig, who wore a black suit and helmet, was Perry McCarthy. He left the show in 2003 after his identity was revealed.
The show has a long-standing policy of not commenting on The Stig's identity. A "Top Gear" spokeswoman said no decision has been made on whether the character will be back when the show returns.
"Top Gear" is one of the BBC's most successful programs, and is seen in more than 100 countries around the world. Alongside the show's three garrulous hosts, The Stig is an always-silent presence, fearlessly navigating the show's test track in glamorous cars.
Speculation over his identity is a favorite pastime for fans of the show, and the "Top Gear" website sells T-shirts proclaiming "I am The Stig," "I am not The Stig," and "I am The Stig's fat cousin," among others.
"The whole point of The Stig is the mystique — the bizarre characteristics he has, the wonderment created about what he might think, feel, do or look like," producer Andy Wilman said in a post on the show's website. "Kids adore the conceit, and I believe adults, although they know it's a man in a suit (or is it?) gladly buy into the whole conceit because they find it entertaining."
The Stig's Facebook page — which more than 2.5 million people "like" — says he was recently attacked by a goose, that his ears "are not where you would expect them to be," and that he thinks the movie "Star Wars" is a documentary.
The BBC said it sought the injunction — the hearing was held in private — because viewers like the mystery surrounding the driver's identity and it's "vital to protect the character of The Stig."
The broadcaster said that the judgment does not prevent them from taking the issue further in the courts.
'The BBC will not be deterred from protecting such information from attack no matter when or by whom it should arise," the broadcaster said in a statement.
Collins' website says he has raced on the Formula Three and NASCAR circuits, and drove James Bond's Aston Martin in the 2008 film "Quantum of Solace."
SILVER SPRING, Md. - Montgomery County Police have shot a gunman who held several people hostage in the Discovery Communications building in Silver Spring for nearly four hours Wednesday.

Three people who had been taken hostage are now safe and out of the building, Montgomery County Police Chief Tom Manger says.

The gunman is in custody. There is no word on his condition. Manger says the suspect was shot at 4:48 p.m. Wednesday.

Manger says a device strapped to the gunman appeared to go off. Authorities believe there was some smoke and may have heard a popping noise but have not confirmed anything.

"We believe there are other suspected devices in the building that have not been rendered safe. The operation at this point is to make sure those devices are rendered safe," Manger says.

Police had been in negotiations for nearly four hours over the phone with the gunman, who was on the first floor area of the building.

Manger would not confirm the identity of the suspect, or his demands.

There are no reports of any injuries.

Police say the man burst into the main lobby of the downtown Silver Spring office around 1 p.m. Wednesday.

"He was wearing what appear to be metallic canister devices on his front and back. He also pulled out a handgun and was waving the handgun around," Manger says.

The building has been evacuated. Most of the building's 1,900 employees are out, Manger says.

Police have not identified the suspect, but say he has "concerns" with the Discovery Corporation. Montgomery County Police Capt. Paul Starks would not say if the man works there now or worked there in the past.

WTOP National Security Correspondent J.J. Green reports the suspect's name is James J. Lee and he lives in the area.

Green reports Lee is 43 years old and has been involved in protests at the Discovery Communications building for several years.

Lee was arrested in 2008 for disorderly conduct and littering on the grounds of the building, according to police reports. At the time, Montgomery County Police said they were concerned with his mental state.

Sources tell Green the suspect may have a list of demands on the Internet.

Law enforcement sources tell WTOP the suspect may have a propane tank strapped to him and may be carrying a silver pistol.

Sources are saying the suspect is allegedly upset about the documentary called "Whale Wars."

A daycare with about 100 children inside the building was also evacuated. WTOP's Kate Ryan, who is on the scene, says children were being rolled out in cribs. The children were taken to a nearby McDonald's.

Multiple witnesses reported shots were fired, WTOP's Brennan Haselton reports.

A person inside the building told The Associated Press says the man had something strapped to his chest and has hostages. The person refused to be identified, saying people inside have been told not to speak to the media.

SWAT teams are at the building, which is located on Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring.

Bomb technicians are also on the scene, Montgomery County fire department spokesman Capt. Oscar Garcia says. ATF and FBI officials are also on the scene.

Faisal Afzal, a systems engineer at Discovery, tells WTOP he was heading back into the building after lunch at about 1 p.m. and was about 20 feet from the door when he heard a street vendor yelling.

"We heard a street vendor yelling, there's a guy with a gun, there's a guy with a gun. He's in the building. And I saw people lying down on the floor at the building. And we just ran away from the building and we heard a couple shots fired," Afzal tells WTOP.

"I saw at least four people lying sideways on the floor."

Adam Dolan, a sales director in Discovery's education division, told The Associated Press by phone that he was heading to lunch with a co-worker when he heard there was a situation in the building.

He was told to go back up to the top floor, the ninth, and lock the door and turn off the lights. Eventually the workers were herded down a stairwell and told to go home.

"Everyone was very scared, but at the same time ... I think people were calm and collected and responded as one would expect in this situation," said Dolan, 28.
Discovery employees tell WTOP a mass email was sent initially telling employees to shelter in place in their offices because there was a gunman in the lobby. Then, employees were told to move to the side of the building furthest away from the lobby side of the building. Employees were then moved to higher floors before being evacuated by through the stairwells.

WTOP's Kate Ryan, who is on the scene, says there is an amazing police presence in the area.

"Police have absolutely saturated the area," Ryan says.

Authorities descended on the area, and people are being kept away from the main drag of the downtown area where the building is located amid restaurants and shops.

Roads in the downtown Silver Spring area are closed. Drivers are being urged to avoid the area, if possible.

Georgia Avenue is closed in Montgomery County in both directions from Colesville Road to Wayne Avenue.

Traffic entering Silver Spring on northbound Georgia Avenue is being rerouted left on Spring Street and then right onto 16th Street. Southbound traffic can also use 16th Street as an alternate route.

DDOT is also encouraging northbound motorists on Georgia Avenue in the District to use Piney Branch Road as an alternate route to bypass the closures on Georgia Avenue. Eastern Avenue, on the District/Montgomery county border, can also be used to get to 16th Street.

The situation is not affecting Metro rail service. However, the Metro entrance on Wayne Avenue is closed, WTOP's Adam Tuss, who is on the scene, reports.

Metrobus routes are being affected.

St. Michael's School on Wayne Avenue is under lockdown. All students are accounted for, but will not be released until the situation is resolved.

Discovery Communications Inc. operates cable and satellite networks in the U.S., including The Discovery Channel, TLC and Animal Planet. Discovery shows include "Cash Cab" and "Man vs. Wild," and TLC airs "American Chopper" and "Kate Plus Eight."

Animal Planet also airs the controversial series "Whale Wars," about attempts by environmentalists to disrupt the Japanese whaling industry.
Follow Jay Busbee on Twitter at @jaybusbee.
You can use a golf club for all kinds of non-golfy purposes -- walking stick, fishing rod, club, to name three. And now we can add to that list -- firestarter.
Over the weekend, a golfer's routine swing in the rough at the Shady Canyon Golf Course in Irvine, Calif., struck a rock. Not so different from the way you play, right? Only this time, the impact caused a spark, and the spark set off a blaze that eventually covered 25 acres, according to the Steven Buck, General Manager of Shady Canyon Golf Course, and required the efforts of 150 Orange County firefighters, writes the Associated Press.
Wow. And I felt bad the time I shanked a ball through the window of a house too close to the fairway. That was nothing compared to this!
The golfer's name is being withheld, which is probably for the best, and no charges are going to be filed. Fortunately, it all could have been much worse. As it was, the blaze required both helicopters and on-the-ground crews.
The conditions were ripe for a blaze, with dry brush from a recent heat wave just waiting for the right spark. Like, say, one caused by metal on rock.
And now, your turn. This is going to inspire a raft of bad Sportscenter-esque "When we say he set the course on fire, he really set the course on fire!" jokes. So let's get ahead of the curve. Best bad golf-and-fire-related pun in the comments wins a round of applause. Go!

Posted 5 hours 14 mins ago - By Stephen Johnson

As of November 1, users of Xbox Live Gold will be paying more for the online service. The price of Gold in the U.S. is going from $7.99 a month to $9.99 a month. Three-month buys will go from $19.99 to $24.99, and if you buy your Xbox Live by the year, you'll be paying $59.99 instead of $49.99 annually.
"Since launching Xbox Live in 2002 we have continually added more content and entertainment experiences for our members, while keeping the price the same. We’re confident that when the new pricing takes effect, an Xbox Live Gold membership will continue to offer the best value in the industry," Posts Major Nelson on Xbox Live's official blog, before reminding you to re-up your subscription now, to avoid the new, higher rates.

Analyst Jesse Divnich from EEDAR said his company doesn't believe the $10 price increase will "fully affect current Xbox Live Gold subscribers until late 2011 and beyond, as Microsoft will likely run numerous promotions allowing users to renew at cheaper rates.”
“EEDAR believes the fee increase will do little to impact the positive momentum of the Xbox 360," Divnich said in a statement. “When originally launched in 2002, a Gold subscription cost the same as an AAA video game, $49.99. When taking into account for inflation ($50 in 2002 is roughly $60 in 2010) and the additional services available to Gold subscribers in 2010, such as ESPN, Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, Last.fm and Video Kinect, a $10 price increase still represents an incredible value to consumers.”
What do you think, though? Will the price-bump cause you to cancel your subscription? Or do you think it's a fair amount to pay?

Posted 3 hours 25 mins ago - By Stephen Johnson

What if I told you I've found a way for you to spend the next few month doing nothing but playing a Playstation Portable? All your food will be taken care of, and you'll even get the PSP for free?
"What's the catch?" you ask. Well, you have to spend the next three or four months trapped in a mine in Chile.
As you may have heard, there are 33 miners trapped in a collapsed mine shaft in Chile right now, and they are going to be down there for awhile-- experts estimate three to four months. The miners aren't in immediate danger of losing their lives, so boredom and isolation will be the real problem, so the authorities have lowered down PSPs with the food, water and other supplies. PSP to the rescue!

Of course, the battery life of the PSPs might be an issue, but judging from the videos, they have generators down there.
All of this got me thinking: What is the perfect video game to play in that situation? How about Dig Dug? Sonic? Tony Hawk: Underground?
